Dragon Con, the fantasy / science fiction convention that happens in Atlanta, Georgia, had about 60,000 participants this year. Perhaps due to the Project Secret Identity launched by io9, a science fiction blog, and the EFF, a lot of these participants added clever privacy slogans to their attire.
Project Secret Identity
The yearly Dragon Con attracts a lot of cosplay enthusiasts. But this Labor Day saw many of them showing off more than just their elaborate costumes. Many carried signs with slogans from the Project Secret Identity effort. Some read “Privacy is not a Fantasy” while others said “I have the Right to a Secret Identity”. These witty slogans are helping more people relate to the need for more involvement in the battle for online freedom and privacy. They have undoubtedly caught on with this group.
Project Secret Identity ran a photo campaign that several science fiction and fantasy organizations have supported. During Dragon Con, participants helped by promoting the cause and calling others to join the fight for Internet rights. Many still do not understand what is really going on and how it affects them. These efforts are important to properly educate people and bring them around from the propaganda that they have been fed.
HMA has their own Internet privacy campaign, The Pussycat Riot, and is encouraged by the growth of similar campaigns around the country. People can still join both Project Secret Identity and The Pussycat Riot by uploading their photos to the respective websites. The Internet needs our help to stay free from government control.
