Guide to Configure Your Windows-RT based Microsoft Surface to Connect to a VPN Connection

The Surface tab from Microsoft can be used to connect to a network at your workplace by using a VPN (Virtual Private Network Connection), which is generally used to connect all the workplace systems to large corporate networks. Windows RT is offered with an inbuilt support for a VPN connection, while a third party software can also be installed on the device, if the software is listed in the Windows store. However, using the internal support for a VPN connection, you can set up a VPN connection on your Surface tab by following a simple step by step guide, which is given below.

  • Before beginning with the setup process for a VPN connection on the Surface tab, you need to have the IP address of the server, which you wish to connect to. The server address can be obtained from the welcome mail received from the VPN provider or you can visit the customer area for the same.
  • Now, open the tab’s network settings and connect to an available network through the device.
  • After connecting to the network, open the ‘Search charm’ of the tab and then enter the ‘network’ value in the search box available. Now, tap on the ‘settings’ value to open the network related settings.
  • You will see a list of search results related to the network settings, from which, you should tap on the ‘Network & Sharing Center’ option.
  • Now tap on the ‘Setup a new connection’ option and then tap on the ‘Connect to a Workplace’ option from the next list.
  • Now, you will be prompted to choose the type of the network to be created, where you need to tap on the ‘Use my internet connection (VPN)’ option.
  • Here, you will be asked for the name of the VPN server, which you need to enter in the ‘Internet Address’ field, after which, tap on the ‘Create’ button to create a new VPN connection.
  • Now, tap on the name of the VPN connection created and then tap on the ‘connect’ option to initiate the connection process.
  • Here, you will be prompted for the log in credentials of the connection, where you need to enter the values for the ‘username’ and ‘password’ fields and then tap on the ‘OK’ button to connect to the server.
  • With this step, the setup of a VPN connection on the Microsoft Surface is finished.

Connect or Disconnect:

  • Open the ‘Settings charm’ from the home screen and then tap on the icon for wireless or wired network.
  • You will see a list of connections available for your device under ‘connections’, where you need to click on the VPN connection that you just created.
  • You will get an option to ‘Connect’ or ‘Disconnect’, depending on whether you are already connected to the network or not.

Thus, with the help of this guide, you are now able to create a new VPN connection on your Microsoft Surface tab and then configure it to be used with your VPN service.
