Connecting to an L2TP VPN Connection from a Windows XP System via Draytek Vigor Router

You can configure your Draytek Vigor Router to use it for connecting to an L2TP VPN connection. The instructions below help you establish an L2TP based VPN connection through the router from a Windows XP based system.

Setting up Remote User Profile on the Router:

  • At first, you need to get access to the web interface of your router, on which, you need to click on the ‘Advanced Setup’ icon and then select the ‘Remote Dial-in Users Setup’ option to proceed with the connection.
  • Here, you need to input the values for the log in credentials for your remote user in the desired fields and then, select the ‘L2TP with IPSec Policy’ under the “Allowed Dial-in Type” option. For the L2TP with Policy, you need to choose either of the options ‘must’ or ‘nice to have’ that will be available in the pull down menu available next to the option.
  • Now, click on the ‘VPN’ option available on the main page of the web configuration of your router, wherein, you need to select the option named either ‘Remote IKE’ or IPSec General Setup’. Here, you will get a field labeled ‘Pre-shared Key’, where you need to enter the pre-shared key for your connection.
  • Enter the value for the key in the required fields and make sure all the options are selected and then click on the ‘OK’ button to precede to the next step.
  • With this step, you are done with the configuration process of your router and are ready to connect to the VPN connection through the remote user.
  • After the connection is established to the VPN server by the user, the status can be verified from the web interface. For this, you need to click on the ‘System management’ option and then select the ‘VPN Connection management’ option, where you will see a table containing details of the active connection for different IPs connected to the router.

Setup of Smart VPN on Windows XP

  • To use this connection on a Windows XP based system, you need to install the Smart VPN client on your system and then open it for its necessary configuration.
  • Click on the ‘Insert’ button on the first window that appeared and type in the values for different fields like ‘Session name’, ‘VPN Server IP’, ‘Username’ and ‘Password’. You will get all these values from the welcome mail from your VPN provider, while the session name can be any according to your convenience and then click on ‘OK’ to proceed.
  • Now, select the desired value for ‘My IP‘, select the ‘DES’ option under ‘High(ESP)’ option for the ‘Security Method’ option and then enter the value of the pre-shared key in the desired field.
  • Now, click on the ‘active’ button to establish a connection, after which, the button will change to ‘inactive’ and the LED indicator for ‘VPN’ will glow on a successful connection.
