- To start with, set up the DiskStation of your Synology NAS and install the DSM (Disk Station Manager). To be able to connect to the VPN server from an outside local network, port forwarding needs to be configured, while enabling the accessibility of the disk station across the internet.

- Under ‘IKE Authentication’ option, enter the value for a “pre-shared key”, which will be used for the authentication of the clients connecting to the device.
- Now, click on the ‘Apply’ button to save all these settings.
- Now, click on the ‘Management’ option on the ‘VPN Server’ page to check the status of the connection, which will read ‘enabled’ for an active connection.
Test with an Android Device
- Now, to test the connection, you can configure an Android device to use with the connection configured above.
- On your Android device, go to Settings, then Wireless & Networks and then to the VPN option to configure a profile for use.
- Here, enter the desired values, as configured with the Synology NAS and then establish a connection using the log in credentials of your DSM.
- After a successful connection, the username and other details will appear in the ‘Connection list’ option under the ‘Management’ option on the ‘VPN Server’ page.
